Facebook gets #Hashtags Support Finally

Hashtags are coming to Facebook to help users better surface conversations. The social network wants to make it easier for users to find content already on Facebook, and functional hashtags are the first step.

Hashtags from other services, such as Instagram, are clickable as well. Users will also be able to compose posts directly from a hashtag feed and search results. That could make adding real-time content to specific streams easier than before.  Will they be overused? Are they really necessary? Even if a user does only use hashtags once in a blue moon, they will help Facebook learn a little bit more about that user's likes and dislikes.

But hashtags? Right now, one thing is clear: Hashtags look ugly. Facebook prides itself on a smooth, beautiful design. But they've put hashtags in boldface, exactly the same way they deal with names. So hashtags are as important as people, Facebook?

Twitter's identity that the "Discover" tab — one of the four main entry points to Twitter across all of its platforms — is marked by a hashtag.

Hashtags from other services, such as Instagram, are clickable as well. Users will also be able to compose posts directly from a hashtag feed and search results. That could make adding real-time content to specific streams easier than before. Since then, the hashtag has been adopted by other services, including Flickr, Tumblr, Google+ and even Facebook-owned Instagram.

Gmail get a new design Inbox for mobile and desktop

Google is come out with a new Gmail inbox today which auto sorts incoming messages so important stuff is easy to find and clutter.

The new inbox was leaked that appeared at the end of last week and it shows off a look that is more about helping users organize their inbox into categories with horizontal tabs, versus a vertical list of labels.

Google redesign Gmail's separates messages into as many as five tabs:
  1. Primary (stuff from real people, such as friends, family, and colleagues);
  2. Social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and dating services;
  3. Promotions, for Groupon, LivingSocial, and the like;
  4. Updates (receipts, statements and confirmations from banks, airlines, and other businesses);
  5. and forums, for messages from discussion boards and mailing lists.
On the mobile side, iOS and Android apps will also now offer users easy access to preset Smart Labels for categories such as social, promotions and updates.

Conceptually, this is simpler than Priority Inbox, since Gmail is only trying to sort messages into general categories rather than figure out which people are more important to you than others.

These improvements also raises an interesting issue: the same algorithm behind this feature is also behind the-sometimes-useful but always-intrusive ads. How we balance these two will be a big question we need to answer in the coming years.

Google says that if you want to get the new inbox sooner, watch for a "Configure Inbox" setting to hit the gear menu icon in Gmail.
